Every time we wistfully dwell on some sentiment he drapes across our aurally immersed senses, we share a memory of our common human desires and fixations. Let’s not forget that Alex is an activist as well as a visionary, and that issues we might have developed “mature” or “inf0rmed” views about are revealed to us as still fresh and overflowing with social relevance by Alex’s communiques from his personally chosen hotseat of culture (which is currently the American city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is a place that has made it past many racial, sexual, cultural, and political barriers, in the sense that issues of racial and gender identity and equality, sexual orientation tolerance and exhibition, and human dignity and satisfaction (for better or for worse) are presented by Alex for us to bear.

His message may not alwaysbe presented /in extremis/, and often is filtered through the lens of Alex’s local world, but that would be no different if he were a Native American rain-dancer, or !Kong hunter-shaman, or Irish Czechoslovakian (like me). The fact the he is, and we all are, humans, comes through loud and clear and leaves none of us out. No matter what special group you may be a member of, you and I both know that the pleasure of any group is inhow much it provides for your basically shared human desires. Well that means this is music for the human race, period. How much better can we expect of ourselves?

While I was there I decided to look through the racks. Each Branch holds a few DVDs but you can borrow from any of the branches.  You never know what each branch will have on hand.

Well I found a freakin gem – Laibach !  The DVD came out in 2004 in the USA.  I had no idea that there was finally a video collection of Liabach available state-side.   I have the DVD playing as I write this and I am in heaven.  YAY Laibach!!

This DVD has all of the best original Laibach and some of the best cover-versions as well.  I always knew that “Gububert Einer Nation” was a a Germanized remake of Queen’s “One Vision”.  I had no idea that Laibach also covered “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones, or “Accross the Universe” by the Beatles.

The Hennepin County Library is just too awesome.  Tax dollars at work!  How SOCIALIST to have a public resource managed by the government using tax money collected from all social classes, including the rich.  We must be a bunch of Commies over here in Minneapolis!

The hottest show I went to last year would have to be Devo.  The photo above is a quick shot I got from my phone.  Technically the crowd was forbidden from having cameras.  We were to surrender them at the gate.  OOPS!  lol.

This show seemed like a possible once in a lifetime opportunity, so there was no way I was going to miss it.  The tickets were midrange in cost and we got good seats!

I have to hand it to Devo.  After being mostly inactive for more than a decade, they pulled it together like true professionals.  Not only are they talented and provocative but they have one hell of a work ethic.

They don’t just entertain the crowd with outrageous antics, video, lyrics and instrumentation, they challenge them.  Devo wants you to know that mankind is at risk of de-evolution.  Many of thier songs fit into this theme, and many are just avante guard.

The show was pure amazement.  I was never board.  The crowd never sat down in their seats once.   For the entire two hour concert, everyone stayed on their feet!   The crowd was multicultural and mixed with a slight bent toward nerds and art-hounds.

Devo did at least 3 costume changes and wore several masks.  There was a large video screen behind them and the video program was perfect.  Everything was perfectly timed to match the lyrics and the feel of the music.  The band played flawlessly, and you can tell that most of it was not on a pre-recorded backing track.

They had a new younger drummer who was cool and dorky at the same time, which an odd head movement when he gets in the groove.  It seemed like a perfect fit.  They

They played most of their best hits from the 80s such as Whip it and my Favorite, Smart Patrol.  And they played lots of stuff from the new CD, Something for Everybody.

The new CD is a MUST HAVE.  I love how cynical they were in putting it together, asking fans (aka “spuds”) to vote and give opinions on devo.com as to which tracks to keep and which to chuck.

Here are some videos I found from the tour.  It looks like the guy who took them had an Ok from the band.

While working at the college radio station, WXOU I came accross a box full of tapes.  Each one contained an episode of any number of syndicated shows.

To my surprise I found a cassette tape labeled “Gothic Teens”.

I said to myself, this has got to be interesting. Here was have a raw capture of the tape I made of a Tape. There is about :20 seconds of dead space before the program begins. Go ahead and fast forward passed the music parts and the intro and all that.

I was a into the goth scene quite a bit but I was allergic to makeup, looked bad with black hair, and was too poor to afford all of the jewelry.  Still I loved the music and it gave my mom an excuse to try stuff on the sewing machine.

I believe it was the November edition of a now defunct radio program called New Dimensions.  It sounded a little bit to hippy-dippy to really survive as a show.

I asked my station manager if I could have the tape since the show had already aired.  He said I could borrow the tape but he could not give it to me since it was supposed to get mailed back at the end of the year.  Apparently thats how they did things back then.

So I took the tape to my dorm room and I made a dub to another cassette.  My machine was a bit beat up and I used a crappy cassette.  The tape survives but it has experienced some damage over the years.

It is especially noticeable on the music. I had planned to re-author this show by fading in fresh copies of the musical selections.  The flutter effect is not obvious on the spoken interview parts but it’s just barely with the music parts come in.

I haven’t had time to work on that and I can’t sit on this tape any longer because it’s just really hilarious to listen to.

If you are looking for some great samples look no further! This program is entertaining both for the insight into the period of the gothic movement and for the sheer hilarity of some the things the kids say.  This thing is really priceless!  Seriously.  And the more FUBAR you make it, the more hilarious it is!

So break out the black candles and the incense.  Find a journal to write in.  Get out your box of clove cigarettes.  Turn off your cellphone and dim the lights.  Get ready to laugh at all those times they said someday you would grow up and laugh about!  That  is, if you were or are now into goth.
